YouGov Survey Reveals UK Betting Shops Boost Local Spending

A recent survey by YouGov has shed light on the positive economic impact UK betting shops have on local high streets. The research, which included responses from 1,475 adults across the United Kingdom, found that 90% of betting shop customers also spend money or participate in other local activities during their visits. More than half of the respondents reported doing so on most or nearly every occasion.

This data comes at a pivotal time for the retail betting sector, just ahead of the UK government’s autumn budget, highlighting how betting venues play a significant role in supporting local economies and high street businesses.

Retail Betting Shops as Economic Contributors

According to the survey, the majority of betting shop patrons do more than just place bets—they frequently visit other retailers, dine out, or engage in additional activities in the area. This behavior demonstrates the broader financial influence of betting shops, as they help drive foot traffic and revenue to neighboring businesses.

Bejay Patel, managing director for the UK and Ireland at Entain, emphasized the value of betting shops for towns and cities. As reported by iGamingBusiness, Patel commented that betting shops are “a cornerstone of every high street and provide a boost to local business.”

Social and Employment Benefits of Betting Shops

The YouGov poll also explored the social significance of retail betting. Over two-thirds of respondents consider betting shops to be established fixtures on the high street, and 60% believe these venues sustain local employment. Additionally, 76% of betting shop users view them positively as places to gather and interact, equating their social value to that of cafés.

Entain, which operates the well-known Ladbrokes and Coral brands, has been actively raising awareness of these positive impacts through its “What’s at Stake” campaign.

Challenges Facing the UK Retail Betting Sector

Despite these findings, UK retail betting shops are currently facing significant pressures. Industry consolidation has led to closures by major operators such as Betfred and Evoke. Flutter also recently announced that up to 1,400 jobs could be affected as part of a business restructure in the UK and Ireland.

Further challenges have arisen from recent tax changes. The increase in remote gaming duty from 21% to 40% has already had a notable impact on the industry. There is speculation that the upcoming autumn budget may include a rise in machine games duty, which could place additional financial strain on operators.

Grainne Hurst, CEO of the Betting and Gaming Council, cautioned that any further tax hikes could threaten jobs, businesses, and contributions to British racing. She urged policymakers to consider the broader economic consequences of additional taxation on the regulated betting sector.

Looking Ahead for UK High Streets and Betting Venues

With the budget announcement approaching, the role of UK betting shops in sustaining local economies is under renewed focus. While the sector continues to navigate regulatory changes and market pressures, the latest YouGov survey underscores the importance of betting shops both as economic drivers and community hubs.

As the government weighs further changes, the industry and its stakeholders are advocating for policies that protect jobs and support the ongoing vitality of high streets across the UK.
